Reforming Universal Credit to make it better fit the reality if people’s lives is very welcome

Commenting ahead of Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd’s speech on Universal Credit today (Friday), Torsten Bell, Director of the Resolution Foundation said:

“This is a welcome package of reforms. While time will tell on the detail, charting a course of changes to Universal Credit so that it better fits the realities of families’ lives is very welcome, and builds on the significant £1.7bn investment in the Autumn Budget.

“Protecting some existing larger families from cuts will make a big difference for those affected, but those expecting a third child today will still lose out significantly. And far beyond Universal Credit all working age benefit recipients face having their benefits frozen in just three month’s time.”
