But changes in the labour market, educational opportunities and the wider economy mean that different generations face different work and pay-related challenges, shifting across the life course.
Rising levels of educational attainment contribute to productivity and pay growth, and so are an essential component of living standards improvements for individuals and the country as a whole. The data in this section demonstrates how an expansion of higher education over recent decades, albeit at a slower pace since the early 2000s, has affected the qualifications profile of different age groups and cohorts.
