Entering employment, acquiring new skills and progressing up the pay ladder are important steps in many people’s lives, and essential for improving their living standards. But changes in the labour market, educational opportunities and the wider economy mean that different generations face different work and pay-related challenges, shifting across the life course.
Agency workers are those who provide services in a workplace, but whose employment relationship is with a third-party agency contracting with the workplace firm, rather than the firm itself. Typically classified as ‘workers’ rather than ‘employees’, they often have fewer rights and lower job security. The data in this section shows recent changes in the likelihood of those in work being employed via an agency, overall and for different age groups and cohorts.
