Unsung Britain

Understanding the stresses and strains of low-to-middle income families across the country

There are around 13 million low-to-middle income families across Britain today. This diverse group of families are at the heart of the country’s economic prospects, and any government’s political mandate. And yet they are poorly understood – who they are, how their lives have changed, and the stresses and strains they are under. In order to better understand low-to-middle income Britain, the Resolution Foundation is launching a new 12-month project – with support from JPMorgan Chase – which will also investigate what can be done to boost their living standards.

The project will answer a range of questions about the living standards of low-to-middle-income families. What are their pay, employment and career prospects? Where do they work, who do they live with and how are they housed? What are their health and caring responsibilities? What do they spend their disposable incomes on? How have their prospects changed in recent decades, and what has this meant for their ability to transition in and out of low-to-middle income Britain?

The Unsung Britain project is being launched with new research, and a keynote speech by Minister of State for Housing and Planning Matthew Pennycook at an event at our Westminster offices. The event will be open for people to physically attend, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido.
