The office strikes back

Can post-pandemic remote working solve our productivity challenge?

Book launch for The Nowhere Office by Julia Hobsbawm.

Office work has had a mixed reception in recent decades, aiding team work but accused of driving our stress up and productivity down. The onset of the pandemic has triggered a workplace revolution as remote working surged and employers learnt workers can be trusted to work from home. As the pandemic recedes, and employees start returning to the office, we now have a unique opportunity to decide which pre-pandemic workplace cultures to return to, and which pandemic induced changes should last.

How has office work evolved over recent decades? Which of the changes brought about by the pandemic are likely to become long-standing shifts in the way we work? What are the risks and opportunities from hybrid working?  And how can we ensure that the future of work suits the needs of workers, while ensuring economic growth for the country?

As part of The Economy 2030 Inquiry, the Resolution Foundation is hosting a book launch for The Nowhere Office by Julia Hobsbawm. We will discuss how the pandemic has hastened a revolution in the way office work is conducted, and the benefits – and challenges – that this can bring workers, employers and society.

The event will be available to attend in person with refreshments available beforehand, with copies of the book available for purchase and signing by Julia. It will also broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event.
