Low pay and social mobility are recognised as serious problems across the political spectrum, yet there is a lack of understanding of the extent of pay immobility and what can be done about it. On 11 November the Resolution Foundation presented the findings of our final report on pay progression. It examines the characteristics of individuals, households, jobs and industries where escaping low pay is hardest, as well as looking at those who have successfully earned their way up the ladder. The report considers what lessons can be learned and replicated from these ‘escapees’ across other parts of the labour market. The final report was launched at an event in Westminster with a keynote speech from Alan Milburn, Chair of the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission. The event will threw questions for both employers and policy makers as to what they can do to promote pay progression – a key challenge in getting to grips with Britain’s twin problems of pervasive low pay and limited social mobility.
