2015 – The living standards election?

This event unveiled a major new polling project from the Resolution Foundation which gives fresh insight into what voters think politicians can (and can’t) achieve on the economy and in relation to living standards at the 2015 general election.

YouGov’s Peter Kellner, who headed the research, presented its findings and a panel of political experts including Daniel Finkelstein, Allegra Stratton, Stewart Wood and Penny Young assessed the challenges it sets for all political parties.

The polling examines whether people are resigned to falling living standards or believe they can be improved by shared growth in the years ahead. It asks what measures they think would make a difference to them and to the country as a whole and how much power they think the government of the day has to bring this about.  The polling also considers the extent to which voters will expect party leaders to demonstrate their credibility on the public finances before making their election pitch.

The results present a fascinating picture of the issues and expectations that could decide the election and how these vary among different parts of the electorate.
