Tuesday 11 June, 9.30-11.30am, Resolution Foundation offices, Westminster Tony Atkinson was one of the world’s leading social scientists and a pioneer in the study of poverty and inequality. His final book, Measuring Poverty around the World, published this month by Princeton University Press, provides an inspiring analysis of how poverty is – and should be – measured, covering countries at all levels of development. Better measurement of poverty is essential for raising awareness, motivating action, designing good policy, gauging progress, and holding political leaders accountable for tackling it. Professor Atkinson died before he was able to complete the book, but at his request it was edited for publication by two of his colleagues, John Micklewright and Andrea Brandolini. In addition, the book includes afterwords by François Bourguignon and Nick Stern that address key issues from the unfinished chapters on the links between poverty, growth and inequality, and between poverty and climate change. At an event at the Resolution Foundation’s Westminster headquarters to mark the launch of the book, Nick Stern will give a keynote address on poverty and climate change. John Micklewright will then present the key themes of the book, to be followed by a panel discussion with leading experts in the fields of poverty and development on the nature and drivers of poverty around the world, and what can be done to address them. An audience Q&A will follow. Speakers Nick Stern, Professor of Economics and Chair of the Grantham Institute on Climate Change, LSE John Micklewright, Professor Emeritus, UCL Rachel Glennerster, Chief Economist at DFID Francesca Bastagli, Principal Research Fellow and Head of Social Protection and Social Policy, Overseas Development Institute Chair: Torsten Bell, Director, Resolution Foundation
